Projects

Guinea

Overview

Blue’s second project is a grouped project in the Forécariah and Boffa Prefectures and is expected to cover a total area of approximately 30,500 hectares and include a mix of restoration and conservation. The project area was selected through extensive consultation with local communities and the government, as well as detailed geospatial analysis of the country’s mangrove cover over time.

The Guinea project builds on over two years of engagement with communities and is being executed under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in partnership with the Government of Guinea (through the Ministry of Environment) to jointly explore the potential for blue carbon projects. Blue collaborates with many local civil society, academic and other organizations and stakeholders. Our technical advisors, EcoAct, developed a full feasibility study and supported several aspects of project development. Blue’s local team is based in Conakry and the project areas.

The model for the project in Guinea builds on the community-centric approach and lessons learned in Sierra Leone. It applies the highest standards for social, economic and environmental benefits, as well as equity and integrity. This includes community engagement aligned with the principles of free, prior and informed consent (FPIC), technical rigor and innovation, and sharing learnings open source through our Living Labs platform.
